When Baldwin County’s remaining playoff teams kick off Friday night, they will be facing some tough competition.
The three quarterfinal teams visiting the Eastern Shore tonight are a combined 34-2 this season, compared to 31-5 for Spanish Fort, Daphne and Bayside Academy.
The 10-1 Wetumpka Indians, visit the unbeaten Daphne Trojans, are fresh off a 26-23 win over perennial power Prattville in the second round of the 6A state playoffs. The Indians defeated Prattville twice this season. They are averaging 30.5 points per game and won the 6A Region 4 title.
Quarterback Jamal Golden is tough to stop, accounting for 170 yards through the air and 113 on the ground against Prattville last week.
In Class 5A, the high-scoring Hueytown Golden Gophers (11-1) visit 10-2 Spanish Fort on Friday.
Hueytown defeated defending 5A champion Demopolis 28-14 last Friday. The Gophers average 34 points per game behind standout junior quarterback Jameis Winston. Winston is a threat to score through the air and on the ground, throwing for 170 yards and two scores and rushed for 113 and two touchdowns against Demopolis.
In Class 3A, the 9-3 Bayside Academy Admirals host 12-0 Leeds on Friday.
The Green Wave boast one of the state’s best defenses in any classification, with just 5.4 points per game given up this season. Leeds has outscored opponents 431-65 with four shutouts. The Green Wave has given up 10 points or less 10 times this season, including a 17-6 win over Clay County in the second round. They have not given up more than 13 points in a game this year.
Baldwin’s teams are not slouches, though. Bayside Academy has its most potent offensive team in school history with 439 points scored this season. Daphne’s defense has been outstanding with a 10.3 points per game average and Spanish Fort is an experienced playoff team that advanced to the semifinals last season.
If Baldwin’s teams win on Friday, they will most certainly have to earn those wins.
