SILVERHILL, Alabama --- The Town of Silverhill will once again be celebrating its history with the 29th Annual Heritage Day Festival Saturday, Sept. 15.

Festival organizers will again this year be planning events which showcase the town’s history, including a walking tour and the Memory Lane forum which will be held at the Silverhill Baptist Church.

Walking tours begin at 10:30 a.m. at People’s Supply (United Bank) and will feature historic landmarks in and around the town square.

The tour will begin with a talk from Sid Chandler about People’s Supply, followed by Peco Forsman, speaking about the Covenant Church, which celebrates its 110th anniversary this year, and the Catholic Church.

Bub Fosberg will speak on the Baptist Church, followed by Phil Owen speaking at Silverhill School. Judy Hallberg Easley will speak at Zion Lutheran Church followed by Shirley Stephens speaking at the Oscar Johnson Memorial Library.

In addition to the walking tour there will also be a limited number of seats available for an assisted tour which will also leave at the same time from People’s Supply and will feature the same locations as the walking tour. Another walking tour will be conducted beginning at 11 p.m.

New this year will be a bus tour featuring many of the historic homes focusing along the outer streets of Silverhill, said event organizer Susan Langley.

The bus tours will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature homes of many of the town’s original founders, including the Johnson family, the Langford house, the Dvorak home and store, the Ed Havel home, the Runquist home, Racine home, Paul Anderson’s home, the Fosberg home, Emory Johnson’s home, the Carlson house, the Ekman-Vorel home and the Swoboda house, among others.

The tour will also feature talks about historic landmarks no longer visible in Silverhill, including the Hotel Norden and Oleander Hotel and the Frisk Creamery, which was the first of its kind in the state, founded in 1909.

Tickets for the bus tour will be available Saturday morning at People’s Supply.

“Tickets are free but you will still need a ticket in order to take the tour,” Langley said.

Then, at 3 p.m. the Silverhill Baptist Church will play host to the second annual Memory Lane forum, featuring descendants of some of the founding families in Silverhill, presenting information about their ancestors.

Carl Johnson will open the forum, followed by a Swedish hymn from Regina and Keith Kanne.

Franklin Smart and Eleanor Underwood will speak about the Smart family, followed by Millie Krob Evans presenting information about the Krob family and Jerry Kostelecky speaking about the Kostelecky family.

Paulette Stanton will speak about the Lindell family, followed by Judy Easley speaking about the Hallberg family. Ann Nitteberg will speak on the Nitteberg family with Roberta Vorel speaking about the Vorel and Ekman families with Linda Folkal Myers concluding the forum with information about the Folkal family.
