SILVERHILL, Ala. — An election night fight resulted in the arrest of a Silverhill Town Council member on assault charges.
George Michael Allegri was booked into the Baldwin County Corrections Center shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29. He was charged with third-degree assault, and was released after posting a $2,500 bail. According to a Baldwin County District Court clerk, who refused to give her name, no trial date has been set.
It is alleged that Allegri was fighting with Mark Crowson after the election Tuesday, August 26. Allegri lost his bid to continue as Place 1 council members to Bert Jones by an unofficial vote of 156-117.
“The statements given by both men were polar opposites,” said Maj. Anthony Lowrey, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon. Lowrey also commands the Sheriffs Office Civil Affairs Division.
“This was a fight with no injuries,” said Lowrey, adding that Crowson was “given a warrant to sign on Mr. Allegri” if he wanted to pursue the matter. Lowrey did not comment on what caused the fight. He added that because the incident involved a town council member, the Silverhill police department asked the Sheriff’s Office to handle the case.
“I can tell you that our city attorney has told me to tell you that the Baldwin County Sheriffs Office is going to handle the matter,” said Silverhill Police Chief Kim Wasdin.
According to a release from the Sheriff’s Office, “The complainant, Mr. Crowson stated that Mr. Allegri verbally threatened him on the telephone and then Allegri proceeded to assault him near the street after Crowson arrived home. Allegri stated that he had been assaulted by Crowson during that time period.”
According to a letter received via e-mail said to be from Christy Manning-Crowson, Crowson’s wife, “When I arrived near my home I witnessed this Councilman pulling the shirt over my husband's head, dragging them both into a ditch.” Manning-Crowson did not identify the council member in her letter.
