Town honors unsung heroes

SILVERHILL, Ala. — The Silverhill Police Department honored some unsung heroes at Monday night’s council meeting at Silverhill Town Hall.

Silverhill Police Chief Kim Wasdin presented a plaque and certificates of appreciation to local police and fire officials, and a civilian, Bert Jones, for their heroics following a hit-and-run traffic accident Feb. 2 which most likely saved the life of Bon Secour resident Steve Sutton, she said.

Sutton was traveling south on County Road 55 when another vehicle turned in front of him. Unable to stop, Sutton impacted with the other vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene on foot following the accident.

Jones, a resident of Silverhill, observed the accident and pinched together Sutton’s ruptured artery until paramedics arrived.

Sutton was LifeFlighted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile and had to undergo surgery on his right leg. While he is still recovering from the accident and was unable to attend Monday’s meeting, members of his family were present to greet Jones and others.

Parttime reserve officers with the Silverhill Police Department and members of the Silverhill Volunteer Fire Department were also honored during Monday’s meeting.

Officer Heath Mosley and his canine partner Meg were called in and were able to use scent to track the suspect to a nearby residence.

Officer Steven “Buck” Rogers was the first to arrive at the scene, making the arrest, Wasdin said in an earlier interview.

Timothy Wayne Krumm, 50, of Foley, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. Krumm, who was on probation on a previous drug charge, also had his probation revoked, Wasdin said. He also initially tried to have the vehicle reported stolen. Police have since discredited that report and added filing false report charges to Krumm’s list of felony charges.

Fire Chief Gary Patrick and firefighters Ken Lewis, Lisa Spencer, Alan Jerkin, Lisa Vinson, George Waters, Anna Spencer and Shayna Hicks were also honored at Monday’s meeting.

“People who are always there in a crisis situation don’t often get recognized,” Wasdin said. “Without these people standing here before you Steve Sutton probably would not be alive today.”

In other business Monday, the council approved a request from Wasdin to host a Chief’s Breakfast in October with the Summerdale Police Department.

Wasdin said the event would include about 60 to 80 people and would cost about $10 per plate. Total cost to the town would be about $400.

Mayor Tim Wilson asked Wasdin to look into having the event at Mama Lou’s in Robertsdale.

In other business Monday the council:

— Approved a 3 1/2 percent cost of living raise for town employees.

— Voted 4-1 to reject a request by Hub City Wrecking to add the company to the town’s wrecker rotation. Council member Shirley Stephens voted against the measure.

— Clerk Bonnie McNeil read a proclamation declaring April 22 as Earth Day in the Town of Silverhill, coinciding with National Earth Day. An Earth Day observance will be held Saturday, April 19 at the Fairhope Pier.

— Voted to allow resident Mary Culwell a period of six months to pay her water bill. Because of a busted pipe, Culwell’s last water bill was $504.

— Voted to renew the town’s liability and property insurance with AMIC. The three-year contract will cost the town $26,680 per year.

— Voted to renew the town’s contract with the Robertsdale High School Band Calendar at a cost of $200. Wilson, a member of the Band Boosters at RHS, abstained from voting.

— Approved a request to send the town’s court clerk to a seminar May 15 and 16 in Mobile at a cost of $150.

— Approved a blood drive for May 22 from 2 to 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

— Voted to be a sponsor for the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Academic Banquet May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the PZK Civic Center in Robertsdale.
