LOXLEY, Alabama — There will be something for everyone when the Town of Loxley begins its 12th Summer Youth Program next week at the Loxley Civic Center and Municipal Park.
The camp, which begins the day after Memorial Day, May 31, features daily activities and crafts throughout the five-week program, ending July 1.
Started in limited capacity in 2004 by then activities director Joey Knight, the camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 12. After drawing as many as 100 campers in its early years, the camp is now limited to 50, said Tina Harris, who came on board as activities director for the town in 2013.
“We’re about half-full now and expect that we will be flooded with calls when people realize that time is running out to register,” Harris said.
Registration for the camp is $150, which includes all art and craft supplies, special events, daily snacks and teachers, among other things. Lunch is provided at a cost of $2 per meal and this year, breakfast will be offered for $1 per meal.
“We’re trying to do a few new things this year,” she said, including weekly outings, including trips to USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, home of the U.S.S. Alabama; the Railroad Museum in Foley and Five Rivers Delta Resource Center, along with weekly trips to enjoy free movies at a local theater.
The camp will also offer water days with slip and slides and other water activities every other week with an extended splash day offered the day before the last day of the camp on June 30.
Debbie Huffer will again serve as camp supervisor this year, coordinating additional camp personnel and providing nutritional lunches. “Since the breakfast program is new this year, I will be coordinating the breakfasts,” Harris said.
