Town police department going high-tech

SILVERHILL, Ala. — The Town of Silverhill is going high-tech.

To go along with it’s state-of-the-art new police cruiser, the Silverhill Police Department has received a grant for a new e-citation machine to be installed in the cruiser.

The grant is worth an estimated $3,700 said Chief Kim Wasdin following Monday night’s Silverhill Town Council meeting and while the vehicle is used primarily by Wasdin, she said all of her officers will have access to the machine.

“The machine will have the biggest advantage during road blocks,” Wasdin said. “An officer can use this machine to automatically scan a person’s driver license and have instant access to all the person’s (driving and criminal history) information.”

The only cost to the town, Wasdin said, which was approved at Monday’s council meeting, would be some installation costs, totalling less than $100. The measure was approved unanimously at Monday’s meeting with all council members except Bert Jones present.

In other business Monday the council:

— Voted to give $20 per student for the 12 students from Silverhill who will be attending this year’s Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Academic Banquet for a total of $240.

— Voted to retain Carl Johnson for this year’s town audit.

— Tabled a measure to support the County Commission’s bid to extend County Road 83 from Interstate 10 to Interstate 65. Council member Shirley Stephens earlier proposed to deny the measure, but it died for lack of a second. She voted against the measure to table the matter.

— Voted to retain Trojan Landscaping to install pavers at the town Kids Park at a cost of $4,500.

— Voted to approve the town’s annual spraying contract at Oscar Johnson Park at a cost of $535.

— Voted to purchase six sprinkler heads for the town’s ball park at a cost of $10 each for a total of $60.

— Voted to deny the purchase of an advertisement in “Where the Soil Meets the Sea” a supplement to the Mobile Register.
