Town spreads Christmas cheer

SILVERHILL — The Town of Silverhill is in the Christmas spirit with several holiday-related events touched upon at Monday night’s regular council meeting.

The Town Council voted Monday to allow Superintendent of Utilities Steve Williams to spend up to $200 on throws for the town’s annual Christmas parade Friday night.

Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with music at the Gazebo. The town Christmas parade will follow along Highway 104 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Christmas open house with Town Hall, along with other businesses, welcoming the public.

The Town Council also followed the meeting, welcoming employees and members of the town’s Planning and Zoning boards to Christmas dinner.

The Council was also in a giving mood, donating $1,000 to the Central Baldwin Middle School cheerleading squad.

The 16-member squad includes nine from Silverhill. The donation is to help with expenses for a UCA National Competition in 2008. The squad will also participate in next year’s GMAC Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.

The council also authorized to send Chief Kim Wasdin for training, authorized the purchase of tires for one police car and front-end work for another at Monday’s meeting.

In other business, the council:

— Signed its annual workers comp statement of commitment.

— Voted to renew its Chamber of Commerce membership at the Bronze level costing $500.

— Passed Ordinance No. 377 to change the due date for utility bills.

— Passed Resolution No. 399 for the personnel policy to create a position of office clerk rather than utility clerk, a temporary, full-time position.

— Voted to appoint Stan Joy to the town’s Planning Commission.
