Town supports tax

SILVERHILL, Ala. — Town officials in Silverhill threw their support behind a 1-cent tax for Baldwin County’s public schools.

At Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting, the Silverhill Town Council voted unanimously in two separate actions to support the tax.

First the town council voted to approve a resolution in support of the tax. The council also voted to approve a proclamation declaring Tuesday, March 23 aas Vote “Yes” For Children Day in Baldwin County.

Mayor Pro-Tem Jared Lyles presided over Monday’s meeting in the absense of Mayor Tim Wilson, joining Council members Bert Jones, Rodney Criswell and Shirley Stephens in support of both measures. Council member Steve Brooks was also not present at Monday’s meeting.

Voters in Baldwin County are scheduled to go to the polls on Tuesday, March 23 to vote on whether or not to support the temporary addition to the county’s sales tax, which is scheduled to be collected for the next three years if the measure passes.

In other business Monday, the council voted to ammend its contract with V.O.A.D.

The council voted at a previous meeting to contract with V.O.A.D., which provides support to responders during emergency situations such as hurricanes. Originally the contract read that the town would donate $1,000 to the organization, but it was later amended to read “up to $1,000.

Council members voted Monday to further amend the contract to donate $250.

The Council also took several actions Monday to provide for Town Superintendent of Utilities Steve Williams to prepare the town’s ballfields for the upcoming youth season.

First, the council voted to allow Williams to purchase replacement base rubbers and the two pitching rubbers on the field. The base rubbers cost $102.95 per set, Williams said, while the pitching rubbers cost $12.95 each.

The council also voted to allow teams to use the field lights for practice up to 9 p.m. In her motion, Stephens stressed that the lights were to be used for team use only, not for individual use.

The council also voted Monday to allow Williams to purchase sand for the ballfields, at a cost not to exceed $425. Williams said one load of sand costs approximately $400 and that he could get red dirt for use on the ballfields at no cost.

The council also voted Monday to approve a resolution to support the Multiple Peril Insurance Act of 2009, which is currently before Congress.

The council also voted to spend $25 on a cake to celebrate the town’s groundbreaking ceremony for sidewalk construction, which will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 25 at Oscar Johnson Park.
