SILVERHILL — The Silverhill Town Council set the wheels in motion Monday night to “go green” later this month to celebrate Arbor Day.
Town Clerk Bonnie McNeil read a proclamation at Monday’s meeting, declaring Feb. 24-29 as Arbor Week and Feb. 29 as Arbor Day.
The town will give away trees Thursday and Friday, Feb. 28 and 29 beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday and lasting until all trees are given away.
The town, which has long been known for its majestic oaks which line Highway 104, will also begin the process of replacing some of the trees lost during Hurricane Ivan in 2004. The town will hold a tree planting ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday at Paul Anderson Park.
The town also authorized Monday the purchase of labels and set ups for the tree giveaway.
In other business Monday, the council voted to contract with Terminex for termite and pest control for the town’s buildings, including town hall, Little Hall, the Oscar Johnson Memorial Library, and the town’s utility building.
The contract calls for a one-time treatment costing $3,790 with an annual inspection costing $500 for termites and $480 for pests.
Council members said while some bids were lower than Terminex, the company was the only one to offer a lifetime guarantee. Also with Terminex there would be no question of reliability, Council members said.
“I have nothing against the other companies. I’m sure they’re reputable,” said Council member Jared Lyles, “but with Terminex, we’ll be going with a company with a solid reputation that we know will be here for years to come.”
In other business Monday, the council:
— Voted to reappoint Alan Nordon to the Zoning Board of Adjustments.
— Voted to purchase a full-page ad for the Robertsdale Rotary Rodeo at a cost of $150.
— Voted to purchase a quarter-page ad in Gulf Coast Newspapers annual Progress Edition at a cost of $172.
— Set a work meeting for Monday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m.
