ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The Robertsdale City Council held a brief meeting Monday morning at the Robertsdale City Hall.
Only three items were on the regular agenda for Monday’s meeting, which lasted only about 10 minutes. No other items of business were discussed.
Robert Ingram with the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance presented the council with a plaque in appreciation for the city’s involvement with the organization.
BCEDA has been named among the top 10 economic development organizations for 2009 by Site Selection magazine.
“In the last five years, twice we have been named in the top 20 out of more than 15,000 groups across the nation,” Ingram said. “This year for the first time we made the top 10.”
An article published by the magazine in May called Baldwin “one of the juggernaut micropolitan areas of 2009,” citing the attraction of industries such as Hybrid Kinetic (HK) Motors in Bay Minette, among others as reasons for their selections.
BCEDA was included in the top 10 along with organizations in some of the nation’s largest cities, including the Baton Rouge (La.) Area Chamber of Commerce, Charlotte (N.C.) Chamber of Commerce and Charlotte Regional Partnership; Dallas Regional Chamber; Greater Houston Partnership; Kansas City (Mo.) Area Development Council; Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Pittsburgh Regional Alliance; Select Greater Philadelphia; and World Business Chicago.
Rounding out the top 20 were Charleston (S.C.) Regional Development Alliance; Greater Memphis Chamber; Greater Phoenix Economic Council; Greater Washington Initiative; Hampton Roads (Va.) Economic Development Alliance; Indy Partnership, Indianapolis, Ind.; Metro Atlanta Chamber, New York City Economic Development Corp., San Antonio (Texas) Economic Development Foundation; and Schuylkill (Pa.) Economic Development Corp.
Robertsdale Mayor Charles Murphy said two of Robertsdale’s council members, Brent Kendrick and Joe Kitchens, were instrumental in helping to form the BCEDA in the early 1990s.
“Within a year after the Economic Development Alliance was formed, Vanity Fair closed,” Murphy said, “and we were able to work closely with the organization to bring more business and industry here to Robertsdale. We certainly thank them for that.”
The plaque presented to the council is a replica of the award presented to BCEDA. The organization also presented a plaque to the Loxley Town Council at its meeting last Monday.
In other business, Tina Carpenter with the Robertsdale High School Football Bear Club, made a presentation to the council.
The use of the digital sign on Highway 59 on the north end of city has been donated for use by the Booster Club. Carpenter said the Club would like to use the sign to promote its Draw Down fundraiser scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 14.
Murphy said the promotion would begin following the Central Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s Flavors of the South event, which will be held July 22 in the gymnasium at St. Patrick School.
The council approved the measure unanimously with all council members present, including Murphy, Kendrick, Kitchens, Aubrey Grant, Sue Cooper and Paul Hollingsworth.
The council also voted to deny a request for sponsorship by the Robertsdale Cheerleading Association, citing previous donations to the organization.
