• Local athletes make high marks at annual Challenge meets

MOBILE—Several local athletes shined in the Open Division of the Mobile Challenge of Champions meet at UMS-Wright Friday and in the Invitational Saturday at St. Paul’s.

Distance runner Carissa Jones of Spanish Fort won the girls 3,200 meters  with a personal best  of 12:00.28 (a 17-second jump). With the win the eighth-grader qualified for the Invitational Meet in the girls 2-mile at St. Paul’s Episcopal. Her Spanish Fort teammate Tre Threat won the boys shot put (48-2 ¾).

• Daphne's Brooke Battiste took third in both the girls 100 (12.94) and 200 (26.21).

Some of the other performances of note in the open meet included:

• Fairhope's Hayden Hatfield won the boys pole vault (13-0).

• UMS-Wright's Sarah Morris won the girls discus throw (102-7).

• Baker's Carsandra Pickens won the girls 1,600 (5:27.36).

• Faith Academy's Keistyn Wells won the boys triple jump (44-4).

In the Invitational meet other highlighted results included meet and state-record setting performances at St. Paul’s Saturday by McGill-Toolen Catholic pole vaulters Sean Collins and Margaret Ollinger.

• Collins: The Yellow Jackets’ senior pole vaulter, despite a strong head wind,  went over 17 feet for the second straight week as in the Challenge of Champions meet at Mobile last weekend.  His 17-feet, 3-inch leap set a new meet record and is the best of any AHSAA high schooler on record. Collins set the AHSAA indoor state record last February with a 16-4¾ clearance at the CrossPlex in Birmingham to win the Class 7A state title.

• Ollinger, The Jacket junior, cleared 13-3 to set a new meet record for the girls at the Mobile Challenge of Champions meet. She set a new state indoor record winning the 7A title with going 12-4¼ at the CrossPlex.
