SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Riders and horses from throughout the Gulf Coast will compete for prizes and championship points in the first American Competitive Trail Horse Association event of its kind in this area set for Saturday, Nov. 14 at Blakeley State Park.

Announcement of the event was made jointly by Judy Jett of Sylvia’s Ranch, coordinator of the competition, and Blakeley Park officials who are providing the site.

Some six miles of trail with challenging judged obstacles have been selected for the competition that offers some $525 in cash awards and prizes to the riders plus an opportunity to be awarded points toward national recognition.

All ages are invited to participate in the family-orientated event that features judging in three divisions: open, pleasure and junior. The competition is open to all breeds of horses and to western or English style riding.

The daughter of nationally recognized Grand Ole Opry performer Billy Walker, Jett will provide music from family members and others as entertainment while horses go out in groups to challenge the obstacles. A dog contest has been added to events for the participants.

Riders seeking more information about the competition are directed to www.actha.us or they may call Jett at 251-865-1299 for information on fees and rules for participating in the competition.

Competitors will be charged the usual Blakeley Park user fees. For advance registration of campers call 626-5581. The park has set aside some camp sites for horses and trailers for that weekend.

Blakeley Park day visitors and recreational campers are invited to be spectators at the event with no additional charge beyond their regular fees. Registration for the competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues until mid-afternoon.
