MOBILE, Ala. - No. 6-ranked McGill-Toolen Catholic upset the No. 1 ranked (in Alabama, 16th in the nation) Trojans 38-28 at Archbishop Lipscomb Field Friday. The Yellow Jackets also took the 6A Region 2 title and ended a 23-game win streak for the defending Region 2 and state champs.

T.J. Yeldon scored for Daphne on the second play from scrimmage with an explosive 42-yard touchdown surge through the Yellow Jacket defense. Two plays, a Brandon Roberts extra point, and the Trojans led 7-0 with only 28 seconds gone. But it would not be a typical Friday night for DHS as Halloween came early and the Jackets let loose a swarm of tricks as well as effective, attack-forward football before a record 5,900 attending at the Lip.

"McGill came out and played, our kids played hard, but didn't make a couple of plays we needed," said Daphne coach Glenn Vickery. "McGill made some big plays and scored some points and got the win. They were well prepared and played a great game. They ran some formations they hadn't run much this year, but just give a good football team credit and congratulations to McGill."

The trip at the Lip may have cost the Trojans a region title, but it might have exposed some repairable weaknesses that a later, more costly, slip in the single-elimination format of the post season might cost the champs: A chance to repeat at state.

"I don't know if there's ever a mixed blessing when you get beat," Vickery said. "But you have got to build from it, whatever you do, win or lose. If we had won, we would still have had to build from it. If you lose you have to build from it because you always make mistakes. When you lose, your mistakes cost more and we have to find a way to overcome it and find a way to get back and regroup. I know we have the core to regroup and correct mistakes and get better and go on. Our kids are disappointed, but they are also tough. They will learn form this and can and will overcome this set back."

McGill-Toolen tied it 7-7 on a Jason Smith to Carl Lee TD pass that covered 59 yards. The Jackets then attempted an onside kick that failed and DHS converted the short field into an 8-yard Yeldon TD in six plays and retook the lead going into the second quarter. The Jackets tied it again on a 6-yard Smith to Jeff Stanley pass with 10 minutes left in the half. The Trojans took the lead for the final time at 3:14 when Yeldon capped a 74-yard drive with a 31-yard run. But McGill's Trey Roberts returned the ensuing kick to the DHS 39 and later scored the 21-21 tying TD from the 15 with a minute to go. The second onside kick attempt went to Mc-T and Jacket kicker Thomas Hamlin finished the series with a 25-yard field-goal to give the men-in-black a 24-21 halftime lead. What usually goes around, never came back around for DHS in the second half. One of the biggest plays made by McGill-Toolen was the 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Smith to open the third quarter. The momentum continued to swing in the home team's favor from there as a muffed DHS punt reception set up a 5-yard Roberts TD for a 38-21 Mc-T lead. Yeldon took one more over from the wildcat formation with 10 minutes to go in the game to cap a 75-yard drive, but the Jacket defense then shut the door to their endzone. Daphne had two more possessions, enough to tie or retake the lead, but came up short as both resulted in Jacket interceptions. The regular season closes this week as McGill-Toolen (9-0, 7-0) faces Murphy at Ladd-Peebles Stadium Thursday and Daphne (8-1, 6-1) will host Baker's Hornets Friday. Both Daphne and McGill will host the first round of the 6A state playoffs the following week.
