Trojan odyssey to repeat state championship ends at Prattville

PRATTVILLE, Ala. — In a game between two high-octane offenses, the outcome would depend on which defense would blink first. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Daphne's did.

Prattville's Jalen Whitlow burst through the middle for a 79-yard touchdown run to put the Lions up 13-3 with nearly 12 minutes left in the game. It was a play many Trojan fans were used to seeing from their T. J. Yeldon. But the only touchdown in the last game of his amazing career at Daphne, would not be his as PHS held on for the 13-3 second-round 6A playoff win Friday at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.

Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery took his figurative hat off to the first defense to keep Daphne out of the endzone in a very long time.

“Give credit to Prattville. They’re a great team and they played really well on defense,” he said, adding that in the second half, especially after PHS took a 6-3 lead, that his defense needed to gamble a little more. “We had to mix it up, we felt like that was our plan going in. And we started playing a little better. I wish our plan had gone a little bit better.”

DHS senior Brandon Roberts kicked a 25-yard field goal on the first drive with plenty of foot to put the Trojans up, but Kegan Gaither kicked one of 42 yards for PHS to tie it 3-3 at the half. Prattville took a 6-3 lead in the third on Gaither's 32-yard field goal.

Both offenses struck deep several times but came up short of the goal line, often on mistakes in the redzone. DHS finished with four turnovers, PHS with 70 yards in penalties to the Trojans 20. DHS quarterback T.J. Fleeton was intercepted three times but still threw for 108 yards on 10-of-22 pass completions. Yeldon, an Auburn commitment ran for 92 yards on 27 carries and caught 4 passes for 22.

Roberts missed attempts from 42 and 38 yards, but threw a 29-yard pass to Ryan Anderson for a first down on a fake punt. Anderson, an Alabama commitment and Eric Lee (University of South Florida) led the Daphne defense.

“I'm proud of this team,” Vickery said. “We have a lot of great senior student athletes and we're proud of all of them. I'm proud of the way they battled and fought hard all the way. Our kids laid it on the line, but when you play Prattville you have to score touchdowns. We came away short of touchdowns but they played well. This is a tough place to play. The big play hurt us but they are good on all three phases. Their defense shut us down and congratulations to Prattville tonight.”

The No. 3 Trojans finished 10-2 and short of their goal of repeating as 6A state champions. No. 6 Prattville (9-2) moves on to the quarterfinals.
