DAPHNE — Brandon Roberts kicked his third field goal of the night into a shifting windy rain with 14.5 seconds to go and the score tied to give Daphne a 16-13 win at home over Baldwin County High.
For a time, it looked like the Tigers had the Trojans by the tail. The Baldwin County defense stymied the Daphne running game and had the DHS air attack grounded. But a change in the wind blew over Jubilee Stadium in the second half and Daphne came from behind again to win a key 6A region game.
"We got behind and our kids didn't fold and that's a great sign," said Daphne coach Glenn Vickery. “We were ready for their formations, but our guys just didn't adjust. In the first half we didn't penetrate enough to disrupt their blocking. But at half time we adjusted to their unbalanced line better and got that corrected and we tackled better. I mean (Charleston) Gandy is a heck of a back."
BCHS coach David Wofford said his team didn't do much differently in terms of formations, but did what they had been doing all year better, but a big play in the third quarter, however, shifted the momentum.
"We knew we had to play to play mistake-free game tonight and having Daphne at their place is always tough to beat. I'm extremely proud of the effort that our players gave tonight. We just didn't play that mistake-free game at the right time. That turnover really hurt us."
BCHS scored first on their second drive when Gandy scored on a seven-yard sprint to the right side to cap a 50-yard drive. Joshua Byrd's extra point made it 7-0 with 3:30 to go in the first quarter.
Daphne tied 59 seconds into the second period when Russ Mosley scored on a quarterback draw from the BCHS 13 to close a 52-yard series.
The Tigers came right back zigging and zagging up field for 70 yards in eight plays to score on a 32-yard run by Chris Bush with 6:57 to go in the half, but Byrd's PAT was off to make it a 13-7 game.
The Trojans then answered with a 14-play march from their 30 before the Tiger defense stopped them at the BCHS seven. The Tigers then extended their lead when Byrd kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it 13-7 at the half.
DHS then made 10-13 on a 24 yard kick by Roberts at the 7:35 mark in the third. BCHS then looked poise to put the game away marching 60 yards to the Trojan 10, but a fumble into and out of the endzone gave the ball to DHS at their 20. From their they picked up eight first downs, but still could not punch it in. Roberts then kicked a 30 yarder as a hard blowing rain began to fall to make it 13-13 with 11:02 to go in the game.
BCHS had the ball two more times but couldn't advance, DHS got it back with 3:42 to go and took it down to the BC 13 eating up the clock all the way.
With 14.5 left, Roberts hit another 30-yard kick for the win.
Daphne will play at Fairhope on Friday. Baldwin County will host Satsuma.
