Trojans corner Rattlers 21-6

MOBILE — Five touchdowns and three of them counted.

That was the good news Thursday for Daphne High who had a pair of TDs returned on holding penalties, but held the LeFlore Rattlers to only one score for a 21-6 Region 2 win.

“I don’t know what really happened,” said DHS head coach Glenn Vickery of the called-back plays. “And I won’t until we can look at the film.”

The field at Ladd-Peebles Stadium was blanketed by soggy yellow flags much of the night with Daphne getting more than two for every one for LHS.

Nevertheless, the Trojan defense denied any access to the DHS endzone until 1:04 remained on the clock and denied the Rattler offense six times on three interceptions and two-of-four fumbles recovered plus a take-away by Willie McCrary.

“I’m proud of this defense. The defense went up and caught the ball and did a good job of giving the ball back to us,” Vickery added.

Chaz Cottrell picked off two LHS passes and fellow senior DB Jovell Davis had one, but running the ball didn’t solve the Rattlers dilemma either. LHS fumbled four times losing it twice, once to DHS defensive lineman Aaron Ayers.

DHS scored on an 18-yard Reggie Hunt run set up by Cottrell’s first INT about four minutes into the game. Justin Koblas added the point-after kick with Will Stringer holding and Aaron Davis snapping.

In the second period, White found Le’Andre Walton on a screen for a 10-yard touchdown pass.

14-0 at the half and then the rain turned into a steady drizzle. The Trojans added a third touchdown on an eight-yard off-tackle slant with senior offensive lineman Todd Theis making way for the Auburn committed Hunt in the fourth.

Koblas and the PAT team made good for the night.

The Rattlers Jones crossed the goal line for six, but the try for two fell short.

Vickery was concerned about the intensity and focus of the Trojans nearing the end of a long four-straight region-game run after earlier region wins over Satsuma and Baldwin County High and more recently at Mary G. Montgomery in a nonregion but important matchup.

“We’ve had three emotional games,” he said of MGM, Foley and Fairhope.

“We’ve got to learn to play four weeks in a row not just two or three.”

The Trojans now face a struggling but eager Robertsdale Golden Bear team at Daphne in their final region game before meeting Murphy at the Trojan’s Jubilee Stadium.
