DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne Trojans won the first half 10-7, but Wetumpka shutout the hometown offense the next two quarters and added the only score of the second half for a 14-10 first-round 6A playoff win at Jubilee Stadium Friday night.
Charlie Crenshaw broke off tackle for a 71-yard touchdown sprint for the 14-10 lead early in the third quarter. Daphne was poised to score later in the game to retake the lead, but turnovers fell in Wetumka’s favor down the stretch. The upset made 2013’s second season a short one for the Trojans as the Indians (7-4) move on to host McGill-Toolen for round two next week while Daphne's season is done at 8-3.
“We knew going in that we were going to be in for a tough battle,” said Daphne coach Glenn Vickery. “We knew going in that it was going to be a close game, we just wish the score had been a little different."
The Indian defense was tough to run on, especially in the first half. But the Trojans made chunks of steady progress in the air capping their second drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Zack Morgan to Wheylen Tolbert for a 7-0 lead with 24.9 seconds to go in the first quarter.
Crenshaw’s first break-out run of 36 yards tied the score at 7-7. Then Daphne’sDominick Brisolara hit a 36-yard field goal 3.8 seconds before halftime to put the Trojans back in the lead 10-7.
"Defensively, they got after us," Vickery said. "We didn't maintain our drives, we had too many negative plays. Give credit to Wetumpka. I’m still proud of the kids. Always feel bad for them. They worked hard all year, but Wetumpka is a good team.”
Crenshaw finished with 139 yards on 16 carries and two TDs. Daphne’s T.J. Reed ran 20 times for 130 yards
"This was a big win for us," said Wetumpka coach Tim Perry. "We've been getting better every week. Our defense played great. Daphne had a great scheme ready for us and we had a little trouble tonight doing what we normally do which is run the football. It sort of came down in the second half to playing a field position game and our defense really came through for us."
Defensively for WHS Justin Conner delivered an endzone interception to stop one DHS drive inside the Indian 5-yard line. Curtis Jackson stopped the final Daphne drive of the night at 1:23 left in the game with an interception at the WHS 40.
Devonte Young had an interception for the Trojans in the second quarter and Morgan appeared to get out of bounds with a first down on a fourth-and-4-yard keeper inside Indian Territory in the final period, but the ball was spotted short of the marker.
The last time the two teams met, Daphne won and went on to win the 2010 state 6A title.
