Trojans looking for team leader in young group

DAPHNE—The Daphne Lady Trojans begin their second season with head coach Kay Flarity at the helm. Flarity lost seven seniors to graduation and so fields a young squad this season, but is not limiting the teams possibilities.

“Our number one goal is to get first in our area, and then make it past the sub state round and make it to the Elite Eight,” she said. “Those are our goals and we also want to play good solid ball right from the start.”

The Lady Trojans will have some pretty competitive company in their four-team 6A Area 2 this year.

The area will field Fairhope, Robertsdale and Foley with Baldwin County High in Area 1 with Mobile County’s LeFlore High and Blount High.

“Robertsdale always puts a good team together,” Flarity said.” That’s also a big rivalry there and Fairhope and Daphne are big rivals, too. it’s going to be very, very competitive all the way.”

Volleyball fans, especially Daphne fans, will also see a familiar face on the floor with Flarity this year as Lady Trojan emeritus Edoli Herrion returns as coach of the Daphne junior varsity team.

”We’re really fortunate to get a former player of such caliber as Edoli,” Flarity said. “She got a scholarship to (the University of ) West Alabama and was a real leader there as she was here at Daphne. She adds a whole new dimension to our program and we fell very pleased and lucky to have her back and heading up our jv team this year.”

The varsity seniors include outside hitter Iris Hill, setter Shani Gilreath and middle blocker Nicole Carter.

The Lady Trojans start off with a home court match against 6A Davidson Aug. 23, then play in the Mary G. Montgomery’s annual tournament in Semmes that weekend; then take part in the UMS-Wright tournament and close out the month with a home-court battle with cross-town rival Bayside Academy Aug. 30.
