DAPHNE, Ala. – Despite having two starters on the sidelines, Daphne keeps on winning.
Reserve quarterback T.J. Fleeton stepped up and led the Trojans to a 37-7 win over the Satsuma Gators Friday night, with a little help from Israel Lamprakes.
Daphne (6-0 overall, 4-0 in 6A Region 2) hosted Satsuma (2-4, 1-3 in 6A Region 2) on Friday night for Homecoming to match the Trojan's best start since 2005.
Senior Quarterback Russ Mosley, along with sophomore running back T.J. Yeldon, was forced to watch the win from the sidelines, nursing injuries acquired in last weeks practice.
"I thought T.J. Fleeton did a great job of stepping in and leading our team. He showed a lot of poise tonight,” said Trojans Coach Glenn Vickery. “Israel Lamprakes has also run quarterback for us some in the past and he did some good things there tonight too."
By first quarters end, Daphne led Satsuma 16-0 resulting from a 35-yard Brandon Roberts field goal, a 1-yard Lambrakes TD run and a 42-yard Fleeton pass reception to Johnathan McCaster to score. Roberts’ second field goal attempt was blocked.
The Gators tried to stop the bleeding with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter as quarterback Taylor Adams connected with Bryant Mitchell for a 5-yard TD. Nicholas Butler made it 16-7 with the extra point.
Daphne was just getting warmed up, as evidenced by a 13-yard TD from Lamprakes with a Roberts extra point increasing the lead to 23-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Fleeton would score along with a Horace Johnson TD run with Roberts connecting on both point-after attempts, putting Daphne ahead 37-7. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Lamprakes had five receptions totaling 84 yards for the night, with Justin Jackson collecting 55 yards on four receptions. Tyrell Holloway accrued 49 yards on seven carries, while Joshua Johnson rushed seven times for 51 yards.
"I'm proud of what these kids have accomplished so far, they gave a great effort tonight," said Coach Vickery. "We had great intensity and we're proud to get the win. Satsuma played hard. We just scored more points than they did.”
Daphne takes on Robertsdale Friday night with Satsuma hosting McGill-Toolen in big 6A Region 2 showdowns that start at 7 p.m.
