FAIRHOPE—The Trojans were coming off a big loss, the Pirates a big win.
Last night at W.C. Majors Field they traded places with Daphne getting
the better and the bigger of Fairhope in a critical region game 52-14.
The importance of which depends on how the rest of their region
matchups go.
DHS now plays LeFlore who Fairhope beat last week while the Pirates
play non-region Linden Thursday, but must hurdle Satsuma Oct. 26.
DHS will then wrap up the region race hosting Robertsdale.
If the two Eastern Shore 6A teams win out and Foley does the same, DHS
is looking at second while Fairhope takes third and the Lions win
Region 2.
“We’re not out of it, “ said a disappointed but resolved Fairhope
coach Mark Lasseter. “We’re 3-2 (Region 2), we still need to beat
Satsuma to finish third.”
The Pirates scored first on a Jamal Woodyard run to go up 7-0.
Daphne coach Glenn Vickery said his team was coming off a tough loss to
Foley last week and may have been still letting it get to them but not
for long.
“I’m proud of the way our defense came back after they gave up a
touchdown early but responded and held a good Fairhope offense to two
touchdowns. Our offense clicked and our kicking game helped us a lot.”
Lasseter said his team simply got out played down the stretch.
“Tonight we had some plays, some big plays we should have made and
didn’t and Daphne made them. They are a great team and I wish them
well.”
DHS answered the FHS score later in the first quarter in kind with a
Reggie Hunt burst from about four yards out.
The Trojans took the lead in the early second period on a Le’Andre
Walton score on a 21-yard sweep left.
Hunt added another off a sweep to his right side followed by a Justin
Koblas field goal from 30 yards with 7. 4 seconds left in the first
half for a 24-7 lead. Koblas would make good on all his extra points as
well for 10 points off the foot with Will Stringer or Matt Kuglar
holding and Josh Reeves on the snap.
The Pirates got into the endzone one more time off a short busted play
with sophomore quarterback Daryl Norris taking it in from the four. The
TD was set up off a great reception by Shaun Fields on a 45-yard pass
from Norris.
DHS never let the Pirates close again, however, as Hunt and Walton
added two more TDs along the way in the third.
The DHS pass defense also made two interceptions, one by Jovell Davis
and one from Will Stringer who picked off the fourth of his career.
Tommy Curry scored from the one to make it 45-14 and Chris Grimes made
it 52 on a seven yarder with 7:36 left in the game.
