FAIRHOPE—The Daphne Trojans redeemed a regular season loss to Fairhope Friday with a 16-14 second-round 6A playoff win at W. C. Majors Field. By holding the powerful Pirates to two touchdowns, DHS upset the No. 4-ranked Bucs on the same field they fell 35-7 on four weeks earlier.
Trailing 14-13, Brandon Roberts kicked a 29-yard field goal with 6:51 left in the game to put the Trojans up by two. The Pirates then drove down to the Daphne 15 yard line before attempting a fourth-and-two, 30-yard FG by Daryl Norris whose kick was just wide. Fairhope suffered their only loss of the year to finish 11-1. Daphne 6-6 will now host the winner of the Auburn - Wetumpka game.
"To sum it up it was a great game played by two great teams," said DHS coach Glenn Vickery. "Give credit to our guys for hanging in there. It was a tough season, but I'm just so proud of our players for never giving up on each other. Daryl Norris had a great year for the Pirates. He's a winner. We just came out and scored a few more points than they did. Fairhope had a great season. It's tough to end on that loss, I know, but they have a great football team." Vickery said he couldn't single out any play or players that made it happen. "I don't know, all 85, everybody did a great job tonight."
Fairhope coach David Faulkner said the loss was on him and not his players.
"You get into these rivalry games, these playoff games and it's one play here, one play there and Daphne made the plays and we didn't. The flow of the game came down to: they took advantage of their breaks and we didn't. I hate it turned out like this for our seniors, especially, but they did a tremendous job of getting this program turned around and getting us on the right track. I'm proud of all of them. They made it a heck of year. I'm just sorry it just didn't work out for us."
After a scoreless first quarter, FHS went up 7-0 on a 42-yard TD strike from Norris to Nate Andrews. Ian Dingwall made the PAT with 10:38 left in the half. Daphne answered on their next drive capping a 70-yard push with a 1-yard QB dive by Russ Mosley but Josh Rhoads' PAT attempt hit the cross bar. Later with 0.9 seconds left, Norris attempted a 50-yard FG that had the distance but struck the left upright and bounced back.
In the third quarter, DHS went ahead on a 58-yard trap run by T.J Yeldon with 2:42 showing and Roberts made the PAT for a 13-7 lead.
But FHS followed with a 67-yard, six-play set that ended with Norris finding Harvey Mitchell over the middle for a 20-yard TD with 10.3 second left in the period and the score 14-13 Fairhope heading into the final quarter.
