DAPHNE, Ala.,— It only took 10 weeks of football, but football weather finally came south to Jubilee Stadium Friday where the Trojans defeated Baker 41-7 to close the regular season on a windy, chilly homecoming night.
No. 6-ranked Daphne (9-1) took a while to warm up leading 17-7 at the half. But the Trojans added 24 unanswered points in the next 12 minutes before handing off to the 2-offense and defense who shutout the Hornets the rest of the way. “Baker is a good team,” said Trojans head coach Glenn Vickery. “And when you play good teams you can’t always come out and do anything that you want. We knew it wouldn’t be easy and it took us three quarters to get a (substantial) lead. We wanted to play with intensity and I think we did in spots, but give credit to Baker for being well coached and prepared. Now we need to get ready for Opelika. "Daphne will host Opelika Friday at 7 p.m. in round one of the 6A playoffs. The Hornets finished 5-5 under former Baldwin County High coach Jack French, Baker's best finish in many years. But the Hornets needed a combination of wins and losses between common opponents with Region 1 rival Alma Bryant to move on. As it turned out, Bryant will advance to play at Prattville because of their victory over Baker this year. Daphne's first opponent of the season was Bryant's Hurricanes who fell 41-14 at Jubilee Stadium. T.J. Yeldon finished with 143 yards rushing on 17 carries including an 18-yard touchdown and also threw for a 5-yard TD to Jonathan McGaster. McGaster also ran two in from 8-yards and 19-yards. Horace Johnson capped the DHS TD scoring with a 57-yard run to close the third quarter. Brandon Roberts was good on 2-of-3 field goals from 27 and 36 yards. He just missed a 38-yard attempt which glanced in off the upright, took a bounce off the cross bar, but fell back. T.J. Fleeton was 12-of-20 passing for 137 yards making some key, drive-alive-throws in a difficult cross wind to Chris Sain, Clark Newsome and Jacob Olmstead, as well as Johnson, J. McGaster and Yeldon. He had one interception.
Baker was able to to drive for first downs in the first half, but failed to finish until Forrest Anderson scored on a 4-yard quarterback keeper for Baker to make it 14-7 with 5:07 to go in the first half before Roberts' first 3-pointer made it 17-7 at the break. The second-team offense for DHS led by sophomore Zachary Morgan made two first downs on one drive and another on a second drive to keep the ball out of the Hornets' hands and the second-team D did the rest allowing just two first downs on four Baker possessions.
DHS senior Elle Nelson was named the Daphne High 2011 Homecoming Queen at half time. She plans to attend Florida State University.
