ROBERTSDALE, Alabama --- In the topsy-turvey world that is 6A Region 2, the Daphne High Trojans did something completely expected Friday night, beating the winless Robertsdale Golden Bears 35-10 at J.D. Sellars Stadium in Robertsdale.
Jonathan McGaster ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass from quarterback T.J. Fleeton for another in the first half as the Trojans scored easily on their opening two possessions, then held off a second-quarter surge by the Bears to improve to 3-1 in 6A Region 2, 4-3 overall. With a Foley win over Fairhope Friday night, and a Dothan loss to Enterprise, the Region's top three teams, Daphne, Fairhope and Foley each have one loss heading into the final two Region games of the season.
The Trojans took the opening kickoff Friday night against the Bears and drove 60 yards in just four plays, taking less than a minute and a half off the clock before taking their first lead of the contest.
McGaster, listed as a senior wide receiver, lined up in the backfield for the opening drive, rushing for 57 yards on three carries, including a 22-yard romp into Bear territory to the 35, then a 32-yard touchdown run two plays later. Tyler Cook's extra point gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead with 10:42 to play in the first period.
The Bears gained a pair of first downs and had the ball in Trojan territory at the 49, but an intentional grounding penalty resulted in a 27-yard loss all the way back to the Bear 24-yard line and three plays later, Robertsdale would punt the ball back to the Trojans, who drove 62 yards in 10 plays, capped by a 6-yard pass from T.J. Fleeton to junior tight end Will Cooper to take a 14-0 lead with 3:05 left in the opening period.
The Trojans then let two opportunities slip through their fingers, recovering a pooch kick at the Golden Bear 37 on the kickoff, but the Trojans' attempt at a trick play went bust when a flea-flicker pass attempt from running back Ronnie Davis intended for Horace Johnson, was picked off in the endzone by Joshua Laird.
Robertsdale's offense sputtered giving Daphne the ball back with good field position at their own 38 and they were driving into Robertsdale territory when Fleeton coughed up the ball, and Adam Sanders pounced on it, giving Robertsdale the ball in Trojan territory at the 47.
Robertsdale would drive in for the score behind senior quarterback Alphonso Stewart and sophomore running back DeMarcus Robinson, converting two fourth downs along the way, then scoring on third-and-goal from the 2. Chandler Cordova's PAT was good to cut the lead in half with 5:36 to go before halftime.
It didn't take long, however, for the Trojans to assert themselves, driving 59 yards in just five plays, capped by McGaster's 20-yard touchdown run and Cook's extra point to go up 21-7 with 3:43 to go in the half.
Daphne then held Robertsdale to three-and-out and drove 69 yards in seven plays, tacking on another score on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Fleeton to McGaster with Cook's point-after making the score 28-7 with 28.4 seconds before halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, the two teams would each add a score in the final period.
Ryan Dean pounced on a Fleeton fumble at the Trojan 10-yard line, putting the Bears in business. After a four-yard gain on first down by Robinson on first down, Daphne stuffed Stewart for no gain on second and Colton Mosley had to fall on a Bear fumble for a nine-yard loss, forcing a 31-yard Cordova fieldgoal to make the score 28-10 with 10:34 to play in the game.
Daphne then drove 56 yards in 12 plays, capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Josh Johnson and Dominick Brisolara added the extra point for a 35-10 lead with 4:57 to play.
The two teams combined for just one first down for the remainder of the contest for the Trojan victory.
McGaster ended the game with 158 all-purpose yards, including 106 yards on just seven carries, and caught three passes for 52 yards to lead the Trojan offense. Johnson added 84 yards on 14 carries and Fleeton was 8 of 11 passing for 98 yards in the contest for the Trojans.
Stewart was the workhorse for the Bears, rushing 26 times for 111 yards, despite losing 29 yards on two intentional grounding calls, scoring Robertsdale's only touchdown of the game. Stewart also caught two passes for 21 yards from quarterback Dylan Smith, who completed 2 of 6 in the game for the Bears.
The Trojans will face a pivotal test hosting the Fairhope Pirates next week before finishing up the 6A Region 2 schedule at home against Enterprise, while Robertsdale travels to Enterprise next week before returning home to face the equally winless BCHS Tigers at home on Oct. 26.
