Evalyn Berglin Porter Turner, wife of the late Horace S. Turner Jr., died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 in Athens, Ga. She was a native and longtime resident of Fairhope and a six-year resident of Athens.

She was born Feb. 3, 1917, the youngest of four children of A.O. Berglin and Eva Mary LaVigne Berglin who were among the early founding families of Fairhope.

She was a graduate of Fairhope High School, attended Mississippi Synodical College in Holly Springs, Miss., and graduated from Mobile Business College. She was a secretary to Mayor Howard Ruge in Fairhope for two years and then appointed City Clerk in l939 for four years.

She married Paul Wayne Porter Sr. in l941. She owned a dress boutique, Evalyn’s Style Corner, and was later a manager for Raphael’s and Holiday Inc. of Mobile at The Grand Hotel in Point Clear.

Active in civic and social organizations, she was a charter member of the Knights and Knighties, Wisteria Garden Club, past president of the Ladies Auxiliary Power Squadron, life member of Thomas Hospital Auxiliary, Fairhope Yacht Club and Laurel Garden Club of Highlands, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and step-son, Overton Pratt Turner of Mobile.

Survivors include a daughter, Paula Porter (Harry T. McDonald Jr.) McDonald of Athens; step-daughters Carolyn (Tommy) Martenstein of Mobile, Marshall (Owen) Duke of Fairhope, step-son, Horace S. (Ann) Turner III of Fairhope, three grandchildren, Paige McDonald (Brandon) Hull of Greeneville, Tenn., Harry T. (Mary Ellen) McDonald III of Athens, and Maureen Adele McDonald of Vail, Colo.; 11 step grandchildren; nephew, Robert S. Berglin of Point Clear; niece Becky Berglin Davis of Canton, N.C., five great-grandchildren; step- great-grandchildren; other nieces and nephews.

Her two special caregivers were Ruby Fleming and Carolyn Watkins, both of Athens.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. at Montrose Cemetery.

The family requests memorial donations be made to The Children’s Tumor Foundation for Neurofibromatosis, 95 Pine Street, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10005.
