SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Covenant Hospice announced its Turtle Derby on the Delta fundraiser was a success. The event has raised $11,195 net revenue to benefit its uninsured patients and unfunded programs in Mobile County.
The Turtle Derby is a rubber turtle race and family fun day where participants adopt a turtle for the chance to win a prize. The event was held Sept. 19 at 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center. Over 300 people attended the Turtle Derby and all 1,000 turtles were adopted.
Dan & Shelby with the 95 KSJ Breakfast Club cheered the turtles on as they raced down Sardine Pass, and 21 kayakers from the Mobile Bay Kayak and Fishing Association helped wrangle the turtles during the race.
The top prizes included a University of Alabama football autographed by Nick Saban, a weekend get-away package for two to Isle Casino in Biloxi, a dining-out package with $250 in gift certificates from local restaurants and a one-night stay for two at the Battle House, A Renaissance Hotel and Spa. Those who attended also enjoyed great food, live turtles, tours of the delta, face painting, kid’s crafts, inflatables and the Gulf Coast Tumblebus.
“We are so pleased with the outcome of this fundraiser,” said Teri Howard, director of branch operations for Covenant Hospice. “The response and support from the community has been amazing, and we look forward to next year.”
