Two dead in I-10 crash

LOXLEY, Ala. — Two people were killed around 2 p.m. Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 just west of Exit 44.

According to Cpl. Joe Piggott, a spokesman for the Alabama State Troopers, troopers arrived at the scene of the accident and found two tractor-trailers “engulfed in flames.”

According to Piggott, “The preliminary investigation indicates that one of the trucks was heading east on I-10 when it crossed the grass median and collided head-on with the other.”

News reports indicate that one vehicle had a blowout and crossed the median, striking the other vehicle.

Two people have been confirmed dead in the accident, but names are being withheld until next-of-kin can be notified.

The Loxley Volunteer Fire Department, the Stapleton Volunteer Fire Department, the Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department, the Spanish Fort Volunteer Fire Department, and the Rosinton Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash scene.

I-10 was closed in both directions for a time, with traffic being diverted to U.S. Highway 90 and County Road 64 and County Road 83.

According to Piggott, “One lane of eastbound I-10 was opened shortly after the crash and both lanes are now open.” Westbound lanes were closed for a while after that until crews could make emergency repairs.
