Two female juveniles charged in bomb threat incident

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Two Baldwin County juveniles have been arrested in connection with a bomb threat phone call.

Two females, both 16, one from Fairhope, the other from Loxley, were arrested by Fairhope Police Department Cpl. Shane Nolte on July 2. Both were charged and released to their parents, according to an FPD press release.

A third suspect, an unidentified 20-year-old female has not yet been apprehended.

The arrests were made after a nearly month-long investigation of a bomb threat phone call made to Thomas Hospital. According to police reports, the call was received by a hospital operator about 9:20 p.m., on Friday, June 6.

Although the police department won’t release the exact language contained in the call because the case is now pending before the court, they report the caller stated a bomb had been placed.

While the hospital’s phone equipment will identify incoming phone numbers, this particular caller had blocked the number.

The hospital operator implemented the facility’s bomb threat procedures and the Fairhope Police Department was notified. Police and firefighters responded and established a protective perimeter around the hospital.

Nolte, who was placed in charge of the incident, contacted the Mobile field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for assistance. Working together with Thomas Hospital, the phone number from which the call originated was identified, and it was determined that the instrument used was a cellular phone.

Nolte obtained subpoenas for phone records and reviewed them, together with FBI investigators, which resulted in the identification of several suspects.

According to Nolte’s investigation, three people were together when the call was placed, and they planned the activity together.

Nolte will present the case before the Baldwin County Grand Jury, where an indictment will be sought for the 20-year-old.

The case against the two teens will be heard in juvenile court.

The charges are for terrorist threats, section 13A-10-15 Code of Alabama, a Class C Felony.

No explosive device was found, and investigators think the call was placed as a prank. Investigators involved in the case agreed that although the call was placed as a prank, any threatening communications will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
