Two pairs to offer two concerts in town

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Two musical performances will occur on small stages in Fairhope during the next few weeks.

Mack Bailey and Rachel Levy will roll into town Thursday for their free folk concert at Dr. Music’s in the recreational vehicle they call home.

“We have a little RV — we call it a tour bus — that we travel around the country in,” Levy said. “We have been to all four corners of the country and pretty much everywhere in between. It’s an absolute dream.”

Music brought the couple together almost three years ago, and they were soon married, she said.

“Mack and I actually met at a wedding and then started singing together,” Levy said Thursday by e-mail. “We’ve written several songs together and have really enjoyed pursuing our dreams together. It’s an incredible honor to work with your life partner and share dreams.”

The musical duo have been in the South Alabama area before, and Levy says they look forward to the intimate setting of the small stage at Dr. Music’s on Church Street in downtown Fairhope.

“We definitely prefer working smaller rooms because then we feel connected with the audience and hopefully feel their emotions right along with them,” she said. “We always hope to expand our audience and fan base when we travel, but mostly we just enjoy interacting with new audiences and sharing our music with them.”

Bailey was a well-established act when the two met, with a rich history of major concert appearances, having performed or shared the stage as opener for such folk and country stars as Brooks and Dunn, Randy Travis, Alabama, Barbara Mandrell, Chet Atkins, Emmylou Harris, Vince Gill and Amy Grant, Kathy Mattea, Tom Rush, Tom Paxton, Kenny Rogers, Alan Jackson, The Oak Ridge Boys, Braid Paisley, Leann Rimes, John Denver, as well as Mary Chapin Carpenter, who sang on his first album.

“In its power, clarity and sheer beauty, Mack Bailey’s voice reminds me of no one more than my friend, the late John Denver,” Tom Paxton, the legendary folk singer, has been quoted as saying. “I love to hear this man sing.”

Bailey and Levy’s appearance starts at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, at Dr. Music at 9 N. Church St.

“It’s a free show but bring dollars for donations to the band,” said Wade Wellborn, Dr. Music’s owner, popular local DJ and concert organizer.

Lisa Mills/Cary Hudson

The other concert is March 11 and brings local favorite Lisa Mills together with pioneering country-rock guitarist and songwriter, Cary Hudson, formerly of Wilco and Blue Mountain bands.

“Enormously influential on the burgeoning mid-90s alt-country genre, Cary Hudson proved himself to be as multifaceted as Neil Young,” American Songwriter magazine reported about the singer, who will appear with Mills at the 135-seat theater at the University of South Alabama-Baldwin County Performance Center.

The concert is brought to Fairhope in the second collaboration between USABC and Dr. Music, which brought Woody Guthrie’s granddaughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie, together with local musician Grayson Capps last December.

Mills appears frequently along the Gulf Coast but has also played extensively overseas, including a three-year stint with Big Brother and the Holding Company, performing all the Janis Joplin parts with the band that Joplin helped make famous.

Mills has also shared stages with singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jeff Beck.

“You should check her out,” said Led Zeppelin’s Plant. “She has a wonderful voice.”

Mills and Hudson appear at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 11, at 111. St. James Ave. in Fairhope. Tickets are $10 and available at Dr. Music. For information, contact Wellborn at 990-3412 or by e-mail at drmusic123@aol.com.
