Uniform Closet open house slated for July 30 in Spanish Fort

SPANISH FORT, Ala.—The Uniform Closet, an outreach of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church, will hold its annual open house from 8 a.m. to noon July 30 at 6530 Spanish Fort Boulevard.

The program provided 184 Baldwin County families with uniforms and school supplies in preparation for the start of classes in 2010.

Karen Dotson, the 2010 chairman of the church’s services committee, said the outreach serves a vital role in both the community at large and among the congregation.

"One of our missions is to serve Christ, his church and our community, and it is really evident that during these rough economic times families are hurting, and it really affects the children," Dotson said.

"Gently used" uniforms can be donated and are laundered if necessary, sorted and hung, Dotson said families can receive assistance throughout the year as students outgrow items and jackets, coats, sweatshirts and even shoes are also accepted.

Supporters can also make cash donations directly to Spanish Fort UMC—clearly designating the funds for "uniforms"—and Dotson said 100 percent of any money collected goes toward purchasing new uniforms and supplies.
