Union Horace Sanders Jr.

Union Horace Sanders Jr., 83, born in Poarch, Ala. and a resident of Bay Minette, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 at his residence.

He was a Chief Electrician on a steamship as a Merchant Marine for 30 years. After retiring he worked in maintenance at Vulcan Sign in Foley. He was also a ham radio operator and a member of Emergency Management Relay Communication. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and served in World War II.

He is survived by his children, John Horace (JoAnne) Sanders of Bay Minette, George Michael Sanders of Pensacola, Robert T. “Bob” (Tina) Sanders of Foley, Pamela Doris (Lawrence) Byrd of Bay Minette, Jonathan Michael Sanders of Bay Minette and Austin Michael Sanders of Bay Minette; a sister, Ina Sanders Boyd of Charleston, S.C.; his grandchildren, Jeanine Elizabeth Sanders, Joshua Horace “Josh” Sanders and Chelly Porter; his great-grandchildren, Alex Bertagnolli and Rhett Porter; and a special friends and longtime caregiver, Raymond Adams.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Doris Olean Turner Sanders; a son, Donald Union Sanders; his parents, Union Horace Sanders Sr. and Velma Elizabeth Green Sanders; and two sisters, Nell Sanders Nelson and Dealee Sanders Hudson.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the chapel of Norris Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bay Minette Cemetery.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, from 5 until 8 p.m., at Norris Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Sanders, Austin Sanders, Josh Sanders, Tommy Cabaniss, Phillip Williams and Stephen Williams.
