Update: Mendez remains in jail on attempted murder charge

STAPLETON, Ala. — A Bay Minette man is being held at the Baldwin County Corrections Center without bond on charges of attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, domestic violence and unlawful imprisonment.

Thirty-four-year-old Mario Dewayne Mendez was arrested Friday, after being found by the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office patrol and Foley Police Department K-9 unit, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Law officers caught Mendez hiding in an air-conditioning return-air vent in a house on Styx River Road in Stapleton after the task force received a tip, the release stated.

“He didn’t put up a fight,” Bay Minette Police Sgt. Rick Davis said in a telephone interview. “He has four charges now and one pending. We’ll present it to the grand jury, then he’ll go to court.”

Davis explained that officers had checked the same home twice before since April, found that Mendez had allegedly left before they arrived.

“He happened to be there this time,” he said.

As previously reported, Mendez was suspected in a kidnapping in the first degree, attempt to commit murder, domestic violence in the second degree and unlawful imprisonment in the first degree on Townsend Avenue on March 21. The charges indicate that Mendez allegedly held a female acquaintance against her will and took her back inside the residence when she tried to escape.

But even that was not Mendez’s first brush with the law. According to information found on the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office website, his previous record includes a third-degree assault charge in 1997 and unlawful possession of a controlled substance charge in 2005, as well as first-degree domestic violence, first-degree burglary and third degree assault charges in 2009.

As of press time, Mendez remains in the Baldwin County Corrections Center without bond.
