In 2006, Jimmy Buffett recorded his album “Take The Weather With You.” Now it looks like the weather is going to take away his scheduled beach concert, at least temporarily.
As of Monday morning, all systems were go. Crews were busy constructing the giant stage on the beaches of Gulf Shores for the Thursday concert featuring Buffett, Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown. Clean up workers were scouring the beaches, making everything clean in preparation for the expected 35,000 music fans and the lights and cameras of Country Music Television who would be broadcasting the event to a worldwide audience.
By mid-afternoon – everything stopped.
After consulting with the weather service, and meeting with concert promoters and other officials involved in the event, the City of Gulf Shores held a press conference announcing that the event would have to be postponed.
Due to increased water inundation at the beach, officials decided that it was not going to be conducive to keeping the large stage stable in the sand.
Parts of the stage stretched out 200 feet from the beach boardwalk, and with increased surf conditions possible, Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft said is would be “absolutely unsafe to have that stage in that location.”
In a press release from the City of Gulf Shores at 4 p.m. on Monday, Mayor Craft said “This is a disappointment, obviously, but Jimmy Buffett is still coming to the Gulf Coast on July 11, and tickets will be honored at that time. We will look forward to his being here later.”
Jimmy Buffett’s sister, Lucy, who owns Lulu’s at Homeport Marina, made it clear that is was not her brother’s desire to cancel the event.
“I got a call a couple of hours ago that there could be some safety issues with the stage, and Jimmy told me that he really, really doesn’t want to cancel the concert,” Lucy Buffett said. “But cancel is not the word because he said he was coming no matter what.”
Since issues with Mother Nature cannot always be avoided, Buffett said her brother, who had availability on July 11, would return to do the concert on that date.
“As far as we know, it will be the same time, and same place, but on the 11th of July,” said Lucy Buffett.
Craft said the City was appreciative to have someone like Jimmy Buffett being so willing to work around the weather issue.
“We are fortunate to have Jimmy’s generosity to help support this community and the entire Gulf Coast area, as well as his willingness to adapt to the conditions that exist.”
Herb Malone, CEO of the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau said he deeply regrets any inconveniences the postponement caused any guests who were coming to town for the concert.
“I know a lot of people were going to be here this weekend for this event, but Mother Nature did not cooperate,” Malone said.
Malone said individuals who had reservations for the weekend should contact the company with whom they made arrangements in order to make changes.
“I feel very comfortable that our businesses will work with everyone in a very cooperative manner.”
Officials said they are unsure if the event will still be carried by CMT as a live broadcast.
The Montgomery Gentry concert is still planned for The Wharf, and the fireworks shows, Saturday night in Orange Beach at Perdido Beach Resort, and on the Fourth of July in Gulf Shores and at the Wharf, will go on as planned. Only the July 1 concert will be temporarily postponed.
