USN Ret. Capt. John A. “Jack” Duncan, born in Laramie, Wyo. on Aug. 26, 1919, passed away Oct. 30, 2013. He was a resident of Loxley.
He entered the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet in January 1941, and upon completion of his flight training he served as a flight instructor until the outbreak of the war with Japan.
He was assigned to duty as executive officer and later as commanding officer of a carrier-based fighter squadron in the western Pacific.
He was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses and three Air Medals in recognition for actions against the Japanese forces.
After the war he served in various assignments in Washington, D.C., Korea, Alaska and Panama.
Capt. Duncan was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal while serving as deputy director of operations (J-3), United States Southern Command.
He retired in 1972 after 30 years of active duty.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Spicer of Robertsdale; three sons, Johnny Duncan of Bradenton, Fla., Jimmy Driver of Loxley and Lloyd D. Duncan of Enterprise, Ala.; sister, Mary Eileer Yeik of Yoder, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Robertsdale First Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Michael Lynn officiating. Burial will be in Rosinton Road Cemetery, Loxley.
A visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, from 6 until 8 p.m., at Mack Funeral Home in Robertsdale.
