Utility hosts damage prevention seminar

DAPHNE — A damage prevention seminar — to be held Tuesday at the Daphne Civic Center — will give residents a chance to learn how to prevent emergencies.

The seminar, presented by Daphne Utilities, is a county-wide event.

“We’re trying to educate the public as best as we can,” Daphne Utilities general Manager Rob McElroy said.

“It’s the average Joe that sees an accident or an emergency first, not the first responders like the police,” McElroy said.

The utilities board members will go over policies and information residents should know.

One topic is the “Call before you dig program.” People often dig into the earth on their property, not realizing the depth of their action — literally. Resulting problems such as erosion or sewer line destruction may occur, McElroy said.

Also, residents can see and hear what first responders do at the scene of an accident — “for example, if a street would be blocked off or if traffic is diverted,” McElroy said.

A representative from the Alabama Public Service Commission will be available for questions, he said.

A representative from each participating utility also will be at the event.

The seminar is Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m. For more information call 626-2628.
