LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama and the Sumter County Fine Arts Council will present “All the Way from Magnolia Springs,” a play adapted from Fairhope author Fannie Flagg’s bestseller Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man.
Adapted to the stage by “Greater Tuna” writer Ed Howard, the one-woman show stars Birmingham actress Amber Quick on Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m., at UWA’s Bibb Graves Auditorium.
The story of “All the Way from Magnolia Springs” opens in the summer of 1958 as snaggle-toothed Daisy Fay Harper is packing for her trip to the Miss Mississippi Pageant in Tupelo. Despite being a motherless, dirt-poor country girl, Daisy Fay is sassy, resourceful and determined to make something of her life.
She lives with her down-and-out daddy in the basement of a bar, along with a half-crazy cropduster named Jimmy Snow.
In the comedy, Daisy Fay goes on an astonishing journey through her formative years in rural Mississippi, where she rises from awkward tomboy to a star at the local community theatre and an aspiring Miss America.
Along the way, Daisy Fay does a lot of growing up, emerging as one of the most hilarious, appealing and prized characters in modern fiction.
“Ed Howard has written a perfect adaptation of my book, and Amber Quick is the perfect Daisy Fay. I couldn’t be more thrilled,” said Flagg, who has also written other bestsellers including Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café and Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!
The show, produced on tour by the Springer Theatre, the official State Theatre of Georgia, comes to Livingston after its world premier at the Virginia Samford Theatre in Birmingham.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $2 for students at the door.
University of West Alabama students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
