Vandals urinate on religious texts

BAY MINETTE, Ala. — During a routine maintenance duty last week, Bay Minette Public Library Director Joanna Bailey made a horrific discovery.

Someone had urinated on a shelf of books in the religious section. Bailey said she didn't know if the section was targeted intentionally or just happened to be the spot the vandal stopped at.

"I was going through books pulling old ones that aren't read anymore, straightening and wiping shelves when I got to that section and I was wondering why all the pages were stuck together," she said. "When I opened it the stench just hit me."

Though Bailey has been working on obtaining cameras for the facility, none were installed at the time of the offense. Because of that, the library and police have to rely on the possibility that someone with information will come forward.

"I'm just livid," Bailey said, as she logged book after book that had been irreparably damaged. "There's probably several hundred dollars worth of books here. And some of them are out of print, some are brand new and some were donated in memory of someone - you can't replace that," she said.

Bailey is still in the process of getting cameras and said they will be installed as soon as possible.
