SPANISH FORT, Ala. – The Lady Toros turned a 9-0 opening run into an ever-opening lead Tuesday to take a 57-25, 5A Area 2 win at home over the Vigor Wolves.

Elissa VandeWaa scored 22 points, scattering four 3-pointers between traffic-splitting drives and steal-finishing layups and assists. She had eight steals on the night. Allison Whitley added 11 points with eight rebounds, Brianna Owens had nine points, Jackie Smith and Elaine Wood had four each and Katie Godfrey three for the Toros (7-3). Ferris Mills scored 14 points to lead Vigor (1-7).

Spanish Fort head coach Justin Moore was happy to get the area win, but would like to see more sustained focus throughout the game.

“Always take the area win any way we can get it,” he said. “I think we're headed in the right direction. But I think we still lose focus at times and we need to work on that. But we got off to a good start. Just kept the pressure going and I'm specially proud of that overall, definitely. Elissa had a good night. We don't really talk about steals, we talk about deflections. We did a good job of getting our hands in the passing lanes, our goal is 25 (per game), we got 27, so that's good.”

The Lady Toros led 33-15 at the half.

Spanish Fort will host their Christmas Bash tournament beginning Monday.
