ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Three girls, ages 9, 13, and 15 walking along County Road 65 near Pope Street, never got home to enjoy the fun and hoopla of a New Year’s party.
Instead, the three were struck by a vehicle Dec. 31 around 5:30 p.m.
Two of the girls remain at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Pensacola. The 15-year-old was released earlier. One of the girls is listed in “good” condition, while the other is said to be in “fair” condition.
According to Robertsdale police, two of the girls were life-flighted to the hospital, while the third was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
The driver of the vehicle, who police have not identified, was not injured, and police say that alcohol does not seem to be a factor.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation offers these tips for people walking in the early evening:
— Always walk facing traffic or walk on sidewalks or footpaths.
— Wear light-colored or reflective clothing. If you walk at dusk or in the evening, use a flashlight so drivers can see you.
— Stop and look both ways before crossing a road.
— Make sure drivers see you before you cross in front of them.
— Never cross at a bend.
— Avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
— Keep close to the side of the road, staying as far from potential traffic as possible.
— Wear appropriate footwear.
— Be mindful of frost and ice on pavements.
— When crossing the street, cell phones and headphones can be lethal distractions.
— Remember, no vehicle stops “on a dime.” The average car traveling at 40 mph is moving 59 feet per second; thus it would take a minimum of 189 feet to come to a complete stop upon braking.
— Take responsibility for safety.
