FOLEY, Alabama – Carmen Vivar had 11 strikeouts and hit a solo home run as Robertsdale’s Lady Bears shut out the Foley Lions 5-0 in Class 6A Area 4 play on Thursday at Foley High.

Vivar’s solo homer to left-center sparked a three-run seventh inning for the Bears, who improved to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in area play.

“Our defense really helped me out on their grounders and I hit my spots,” Vivar said. “All my pitches were working. I felt really good tonight.”

Beth Taylor had a triple, a double and two RBIs and Briana Pierce had two doubles and two RBIs in the win.

“We need to work on our discipline at the plate but overall we had a good game,” Robertsdale senior third baseman Victoria Creamer said. “On defense we did what we needed to do to help out our pitcher. Our catcher Allee Bertolla had a couple good picks at second. Overall, I feel like we worked really hard tonight.”

Foley’s Meg Maurin had four strikeouts and frustrated the Bear hitters until the final inning.

“I thought Foley’s pitcher really came out and handcuffed our hitters, especially through six innings,” Robertsdale head coach Barry Roberts said. “Finally we figured out a way to get in there and hit the ball off of her. She pitched really well for six innings, the score is not really indicative of how well she pitched.”

Maurin and Sierra Linton had hits for Foley. Foley and Robertsdale will meet again in the Jubilee Classic at Daphne on Friday afternoon. Play will continue in the Classic Friday night and during the day on Saturday.
