Hurricane Sally left Gulf State Park in a bad way: the pier was devastated, dunes damaged, flooding, tree loss and damage to trails. Workers got straight to work but the amount of work was more than they could tackle so a call was put out for volunteers.
Every Tuesday, volunteers work with park staff to clean up and improve areas in the park. One recent project focused on the hard-hit primitive camp sites in the campground area. Crews raked debris, set fire pits and installed boundary markers in between sites.
On Thursdays, volunteers have also been helping with dune restoration. Crews have been instrumental in the planting of almost 800 sea oats to restore the hard-hit dunes at the Gulf State Park beaches.
If you would like to volunteer registration is required. Email Cindy Langston at cindy.langston@dcnr.alabama.gov to request a registration form. Volunteers must be seven years or older and maintain social distance practices and must wear a mask.
