FAIRHOPE, Ala. - A proposed revision of the city’s tree-protection ordinance was introduced at the Jan. 24 City Council meeting and will be discussed at a work session prior to the Feb. 28 council meeting.
A vote on the revised law is expected that night.
The Tree Ordinance has been the subject of controversy the past few years, regarding whether its provisions have been followed, enforced or could withstand a legal challenge.
The mayor’s office suspended enforcement of some provisions last year pending the adoption of a revised ordinance.
Following a review of the existing law, a citizen advisory committee gave its recommended changes to the council late last year. The council questioned some of those revisions and additional changes have since been made, resulting in the proposed ordinance introduced this week.
The latest version will be a focus of the Feb. 28 work session that starts at 5:15 p.m. A vote on the proposed law is expected to follow at the council meeting that starts at 6 p.m. that night.
