Susan “Sue” Jane Bellows Wallace, 93, a native of Toledo, Ohio, and a resident of Fairhope, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009. after a long fruitful life.
She was born on April 5, 1916 and raised in the Toledo area. She graduated from Bowling Green State University and later earned a Master’s Degree in English from Toledo University. Prior to World War II she taught at several small rural high schools and after the War taught English for 23 years at Clay High School, Lucas County, Ohio.
She moved to Daphne in 1993 to be close to her family. There she quickly made dear friends through her love of golf, her church and volunteer work at Mercy Medical and Daphne Library. At 92 she shot par on her last hole of golf. She was a member of the Lake Forest Golf Club, Fairhope United Methodist Church, the Dixie Darlings, and the Friends of Daphne Library. In 2006 she moved to Homestead Village in Fairhope.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dick Wallace, sister, Helen Bellows Hatch. brother-in-law Arthur Hatch, brother, Hal Bellows, and step-brother, Everett Bellows.
Survivors include a son, Rick (Susie) Wallace of Fish River; two grandsons, Brad Wallace of Philadelphia and Matt Wallace of Hot Springs, N.C.; her beloved beagle, Molly; other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 at Fairhope United Methodist Church. Visitation and a reception will follow the service.
