‘Water on wheels’ set for Five Rivers

SPANISH FORT, Ala.— Wyland’s Clean Water Challenge traveling exhibit  will make a stop at Five Rivers, Alabama’s Delta Resource Center, December 4 through 10.

The exhibit, also known as ‘water on wheels,’ is full of interactive ways for guests to learn about oceans, lakes, rivers, wetlands and streams, according to www.wateroceanchallenge.org, the water challenge’s official Web site.

The exhibit is open to the public, however, due to school field trips, guests should plan to arrive after 2:30 p.m. on school days, according to Hank Burch, manager at Five Rivers.

The goal for the exhibit is to spread knowledge of water conservation in a creative way.

“It's an interactive self-guided exhibit,” Burch said. “It’s got a lot of activity.”

Inside the mobile learning exhibit is a 4D movie theater, a running river, art,  hands-on activities and more,  according to the site.

“The whole exhibit is filled with Wyland's artwork,” Burch said. “It’s where art and science meet.”

The 1,000-square-foot exhibit on wheels will focus on ways people can promote healthy water around them and focus on water runoffs, river management estuaries and lakes, the site said.

Visitors are appointed as clean water challenge agents where they will try to solve water mysteries, the site said.

Wyland, a world-renowned marine life artist from Laguna Beach, Calif., is also an advocate of keeping the planet a clean, safe place to live.

Wyatt out-painted the competition when he painted a mural in Destin, Fla., that spanned more than seven acres and beat  the previous Guiness Record. He is on a mission to paint 100 murals around the world, the site said.

Some ways Wyland discusses to promote clean water around watersheds is to use a vegetable-based dish soap, find a shorter song to sing in the shower, use non-toxic household cleaners, use a refillable water bottle and know where and how to properly dispose of garbage, the site said.

Wyland is an advocate for marine resource conservation and is a painter, photographer, scuba diver, writer and sculptor who has traveled the globe to capture the Earth’s natural beauty.

Since 1993, Wyland has sponsored many conservation programs  and created a series of  about 91 life-size murals in four continents and 12 countries. An estimated one billion people view his work each year, the site said.

A preview party will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 3 and is open to the public.

Tickets to the preview are $50, which includes refreshments and a silent auction, the release said.

Proceeds will benefit Mobile Baykeeper, a local water environmental organization.

A family fun day will also be held at Five Rivers Dec. 8 where guests can tour the exhibit and participate in activities such as  a spacewalk, face painting, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s “touch” lab and environmental exhibits. This event is free and open to the public, according to a news release.

Five Rivers is at 30945 Five Rivers Blvd., on the causeway in Spanish Fort across from Meaher State Park.

The center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
