Wine and classic cars may not seem like a typical pairing, but the Waves of Wine Festival in Orange Beach will do just that, along with music and a boat ride.
With this combination of activities, festival organizers are hoping to appeal to a broader audience than ever before. With the wine, water, neat cars and beautiful boats, there is something for every taste to enjoy.
There was a wine festival held before the oil spill, but it has been reorganized, renamed and brought back. This year’s event will be held at the Caribe Resort and Marina, and “location has everything to do with it,” according to Rod Peevy, festival chairman. With the resort’s location on Caribe Resort marina, the boat rides were a natural addition to the festival activities.
Also located with a great view of the water, will be the stage with three local musical acts rotating throughout the day. In between these acts, there will also be guest speakers from the different vineyards presented.
Another key piece to the event, making it extra special, is the classic and luxury car display show and contest. From vintage Corvettes to the future of luxury imports, various classic car types will be available. Somewhere around 60 to 70 cars will be available to view and vote on and the winner will receive a cash prize and trophy.
On May 14, local wine, such as Perdido Vineyards, will be showcased along with wines from around the country and even some European wines. From deep, dry reds to light, sweet whites and champagnes of all sorts, the samples to try and bottles to purchase are numerous.
Finger foods will be provided throughout the day by Cobalt Dining, The Sunset Cork Room and Cosmos’ Restaurant and Bar.
Peevy is hoping to see anywhere from 600 to 1,000 attendees at the event that is making its comeback after the oil spill. They’ve capped ticket sales at 1,000 to keep the quaint feel of the festival and prevent overcrowding.
So far, they have seen ticket sales as far away as Maryland, Kansas, Texas and Arkansas, so it is also making a hit as a tourist event. He credits the low ticket price for these sales, along with the location, boats and cars, and is pleased with the response.
“We’re here to make a statement for the locals and our area and bring back the festival,” Peevy said.
The Waves of Wine Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Caribe Resort and Marina in Orange Beach. Tickets are $45 and this includes everything that is mentioned above along with a free wine glass and four-bottle wine bag. Caribe Resort is also providing reservation packages with deals and rooms specifically for the festival.
The festival is made possible by numerous sponsors, including the three vendors providing food, Caribe Resort, Sunny 105.7 FM, and Outcast Charters, who will be providing the boat rides.
