Web site helps snowbirds keep in touch after season is over

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Snowbirds who have made friends within each respective club and those who ventured beyond their state's club will be saying their farewells as snowbird season wraps up.

But despite the cross country treks most will endure, it doesn’t mean the friendships have to stop in the sand.

Steve Warren, an ex-snowbird from Toledo, Ohio, established a Web site to help the newfound friendships flourish.

The Web site, gulfsnowbirds.com, was established two months ago to provide a common denominator among the clubs.

“Snowbirds can visit the site and post bulletin board items, photos or announcements from each state,” Warren said.

The site will remain a fixture in the Internet realm even after snowbird season comes to an end.

“A lot of people communicate after they go home. The idea is that they can keep in touch with each other with what they are doing,” Warren said.

Snowbirds can find pictures from the Brat Fest held Jan. 31, a multitude of photos from Mardi Gras and a plethora of pictures from the Press-Register sponsored snowbird reception.

The static home page is open to the public and beyond that page snowbirds can link to their respective states, become a member and share their updates.

“As a member, you can log in and leave a message that is restricted to members only. It’s all free,” Warren said.

According to Warren, he has received about 300 hits, but with 15,000 snowbirds in the area he is hoping to increase viewing and participation.

The Web site is a one-man show, and Warren is looking for a couple of members from each state who might be interested in becoming their state’s information coordinator.

Anyone who would like more information on how to become an information coordinator can contact Steve Warren at steve@gulfsnowbirds.com, or call 251-752-4000.
