What’s happening at Bayside Academy

Here are some of the activities the students were getting involved with before they left for Mardi Gras vacation.

The fourth-graders at Bayside Academy just finished up a short lesson about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in honor of the national holiday. When talking about dreams, they all decided that it would be wonderful if the world was without war and that everyone would get along peacefully. The students really like the book “The Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson” and enjoy its complements to the study of civil rights. They are already eager to learn about the civil rights movement of the 1960s. They will have to wait until spring time to hear about the movement, but in between that time, they will be learning about other fascinating historical events leading up to it.

The fourth-grade students realize that knowing the multiplication tables really helps when they have to divide in math class. They have started taking division timed tests and are doing GREAT! They found out that math is used in every subject when the students had to count how many miles it is from Daphne to Montgomery on a highway map of Alabama.

Did you know that Cahawba is a Creek Indian word for “water above?” Cahaba, Ala., was built from the ground up as Alabama’s capital, but had to move because of the floods!

As we move on up to the middle school, we can see the Bayside seventh-graders have been busy studying the judicial system in their U.S. history class. On Jan. 25, the seventh-grade visited the federal court house in Mobile, where they observed important court cases.

Bayside congratulates two of their students who were chosen as Dogwood Trail Maids. Junior Taylor Donze, won the “best interview” competition, and will be strutting around town wearing her new pink Dogwood gown. Sophomore Sarah Katherine Street won the “best essay” competition, and will be seen showing off her new peach Dogwood gown. Congratulation Miss Dogwoods!

So, Bayside students, keep up those grades while down by the bay.
