The Girls Service Club has been cooking for a good cause! A group of students prepared tacos and cookies and served dinner to about 30 people at the Ronald McDonald House in Mobile this past week.
The Upper School Scholars’ Bowl team has been very busy this week. Recently, two teams competed at UMS-Wright and did an excellent job!
The A-team consisted of Brooke Hohman, Michael Latady, David Reeves and Spencer York and they went 5-5; the B-team included Matthew Wolf, Will Dorriety, Hannah Ng and John Clark and they won eight matches and lost two.
Also, Scholars’ Bowl members will travel to Faulkner on Friday for another competition. Good luck to all of the team members!
Congratulations also to the Middle School Scholars’ Bowl Team. The eighth-grade team won all their matches against Spanish Fort, Summerdale and Newton. The seventh-grade team won their match against Summerdale and lost a close match to an eighth-grade team from Newton. Congratulations to all!
On Friday, student members of Youth Leadership will be attending the Youth Leadership Seminar Day. Those students are Phillip Cork, Will Dorriety, Erika Hakmiller, Audra Little, Anna Todd and Sarah Katherine Street.
The delegation assignments have been made for this year’s Davidson Invitational Model United Nations, and this is the first year that Bayside has been assigned one of the five Major Powers. Students had to interview for these positions and Ian Shields, Brooke Hohman, Canden Jackson, and Hope Barnard were assigned the United Kingdom.
Bayside students were also assigned a Security Council delegation; Michael Latady, T.J. Julian, Dorothy Griffith and Jessie Houston will represent Burkina Faso. Also representing Bayside by sitting as a delegates to Lesotho on the Security Council are: Jessica McAlpine Anna Todd, Tres Wiggins and Ashlee Drinkard. Other delegations include Georgia-Courtney Parker, Audra Little and Nicole Hohman, and Israel-Stewart Shoemaker, Matthew Wolf, and David Reeves. The simulation will be held April 2–3 at the Mobile Convention Center.
Baysiders of all ages are getting excited about The Bay Affair, Bayside’s annual fundraising event. The students have been working very hard on projects in their art classes that will be auctioned off at the event.
The theme for the Bay Affair this year is “Derby
Day,” and it will be held on Feb. 26 at the Daphne Civic Center.
In addition to their Bay Affair projects, Bayside art students are preparing for Fine Arts Day. Fine Arts Day is an afternoon devoted to the arts for kindergarten through eighth grade and will be held on Tuesday, March 4.
In other art news, Bayside art teachers Juli Day and Phyllis Horne will be attending “The Alabama Arts Education Summit 2008” held at Troy University from Feb. 21 to Feb. 23. The program this year is titled “Essential Links” and focuses on creating partnerships to ensure the quality of arts education throughout Alabama. Day is the past president of the Alabama Art Educators’ Association; Phyllis Horne is the current president.
Art faculty member Vikki Finch recently curated a show and hosted a reception for the Alabama Museum Association at Chesser Gallery in Mobile. Museum directors and associates from across the state and region were in Mobile to attend the AMA conference and enjoyed seeing the work of local and regional artists assembled by Ms. Finch.
Bayside’s Guidance Counselor Mary Ann Willis recently attended the College Board Southern Regional Forum in South Carolina.
The second-graders did their part to help the environment last week.
They planted three new trees on campus as part of the Arbor Day program with the Daphne Beautification Board and the City of Daphne.
Senior Dorothy Griffith has been selected as our Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen this year, and she won the essay portion of that contest. Recently she read her essay to the DAR members at the Nix Center, and she is now in the essay competition for the state of Alabama.
From students in pre-kindergarten to seniors in high school, Baysiders are constantly in motion!
