On Tuesday, both kindergarten classes walked to the Daphne Post Office to deliver letters they wrote to Santa Claus. They walked beside their fifth-grade buddies. It was a beautiful day for a walk and the students are anxious to know if Santa received their letters.
Class 3B recently sent Christmas cards to soldiers serving overseas. They are also preparing for the sacrament of Reconciliation during this season of Advent.
In math, they are playing games with clocks to practice telling time.
In reading, Genevieve brought her great-grandmother’s quilt to share with the class as they read “The Patchwork Quilt story in their reading book.
Our Art teacher, Mrs. Sue Bostwick, took the seventh-grade students on a field trip to the Mobile Museum of Art last Thursday. They saw a display of the artwork of M. C. Escher. The students also participated in an art activity about tessellations. They loved the art gallery and want to go back soon.
Excitement is in the air! Carols are being sung everywhere!
And first grade is no exception.
They are decorating bulletin boards, learning new Christmas songs and making Christmas gifts. Along with the fun and excitement, they realize the real reason for this joyous time. They are making Advent wreaths to help them prepare for Jesus’ birthday. They are learning how people celebrated Christmas long ago and how our families celebrate traditions in different ways.
On Broadway it’s showtime for the eighth-grade literature class for we have been working hard perfecting our acting and our puppets. We are doing puppet plays and the top six will be performed again for our second-grade little buddies.
4B students have been writing persuasive paragraphs. They are trying to convince Santa that they were good girls and boys.
In Religion they have been writing books explaining the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. They will present these books to the second-graders who are preparing to receive this sacrament after Christmas.
In Reading they read a story about Basho, a Japanese poet famous for his haikus. After reading the story, students went outside to write their own haiku. They found it fun and challenging to follow the 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
In Social Studies, they finished reading about the Civil War and enjoyed reading the book “A Ballad of the Civil War” by Mary Stolz.
Please try to attend our Christmas Program to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in the gym. You will see fourth-graders playing several tunes on their recorders, the fifth- through eighth-grade McGill-Toolen Prep band entertaining us with joyful sounds and the first-graders performing a play for your enjoyment.
Next Thursday, Dec. 20, mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. with classroom parties at 10:30 a.m. CKCS will dismiss at noon on that day to begin our Christmas holidays. All students will return to school on Jan. 7, 2008.
