DAPHNE, Ala.—The Daphne SEEDS run is this Saturday, March 7. The 5K race starts at 8 a.m. at the Daphne Civic Center and the Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. at Centennial Park.  Monies raised will benefit the SEEDS Classroom Enrichment Foundation, which benefits all kids and schools in the Daphne area.  If you need further information, www.seedsindaphne.org.

Next week will begin our spring study of Australia. Teachers and students will explore the geography, culture and customs, animals, arts and many fascinating facts about this incredible country.

Mark your calendars—Daylight Savings Time starts on Sunday, March 8. Be sure to set your clocks forward one hour before turning in for the night on Saturday.

Mrs. Davis’ class went on a field trip to Sea, Sand, and Stars last week and everyone had a great time.  The class also celebrated the character trait of honesty. The two students who showed this trait were Cameron Vergos and Mary Crigler.

Mrs. Stembridge’s class had an awesome time visiting Sea, Sand & Stars Science and Nature Center in Orange Beach. The class discovered how to figure out how old a shell is along with many other exciting facts about the animals around us. The class is enjoying celebrating “Read Across America” by reading our favorite Dr. Seuss books. The students plan to make oobleck during the study of matter.

Mrs. Utsey’s class had a great field trip to Sea, Sand and Stars at Orange Beach Elementary. The class learned a lot of new things about astronomy and marine animals. Everyone had fun touching horseshoe crabs, flounders, hermit crabs and lots more. The class has also been working hard on writing to be displayed for “Writing on the Walls.”  The class title was “If I Were a Kite.”  The children did a great job of imagining they were kites and writing about their experiences.

In the library our school is celebrating “Read Across America” all week! If you see lots of Cats in the Hat leaving Daphne Elementary School, don’t worry—our school is just celebrating our love for Dr. Seuss and for reading as students and teachers wear their hats proudly. Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!

This week in Mrs. Nolfe’s third-grade Project Jubilee classes, the students will wrap up their study of physics.  They will be making balloon rockets and testing these devices to see whose will travel the furthest.  Next week the class will turn its attention to Australia during our schoolwide spring study.
