DAPHNE, Ala.—Thank you to the Golden Tones and the first-grade classes who participated in Monday night’s PTA meeting.  The first-grade classes performed patriotic songs and many recited famous patriotic quotes from past presidents in honor of President’s Day.  Thank you for a job well done!

Bats in the Library—oh no!

Kindergarten and first-grade students have enjoyed Brian Lies’ comic tale while discovering new information about bats from the non-fiction section of the library.  Second- and third-grade students are studying and celebrating Black History month as they read Faith Ringgold’s “Tar Beach.”

The DES Schoolwide Spelling Bee will be held on Thursday, March 5 in the school auditorium.  Second- and third-grade classroom spelling bee winners will advance to this competition.

First-graders in Mrs. Clayton’s and Mrs. Hopkins’ classes visited Sand, Sea & Stars in Orange Beach on Monday. During their visit they toured the facility including a visit to the touch tank and planetarium. They also got to visit the boardwalk and explore the many trees and plants that thrive in our local area.

Second-graders in Mrs. Utsey’s class have enjoyed learning about community services and how important their jobs are.

Walt Cassady is leading our class in Accelerated Reader points. Walt has made it to the 90-point club!

Congratulations to Rusty Younkin for being chosen as Shining Star of the week.

Mrs. Bowen’s third-grade class is learning about different cultures this week. They will study about Moscow in social studies; they will read “Suki’s Kimono” in reading and learn about the Japanese culture.  This week’s reading skill is comparing and contrasting, so they will be comparing and contrasting the two places mentioned above.

Mrs. Nolfe’s third-grade Project Jubilee students continued working with physics this week.  Upon arrival to their class they were given a raw egg, a plastic bag, newspaper and tape.  They were instructed to design and build a device to safely hold their raw egg, which was to be dropped from many, varied unusual high places around our campus.
